Four Tips for Finding a Safe Neighborhood
One of the most important parts of finding a new home is making sure that the neighborhood is a safe place to live. But how can you determine that by just visiting the home a couple times before making your final decision? Here are a few tips to help you determine if your potential home is in a good and safe neighborhood.
Look around the Neighborhood
The quickest way to find out if a neighborhood safe is by looking around. Do the homes look like they are neglected? Do you see any broken windows on any of the homes or boarded up homes? Areas like this attract criminals because it shows that the residents are not as diligent at preventing crime as other neighborhoods are.
Do Research Online
You may be able to find some information about the crime statistics in the neighborhoods you are considering moving to. Many real estate websites include the crime statistics as well as other information so you don't have to search for hours to get the information you need.
Look for Features that Increase Safety
If you see community parks, multiple-use areas and other places that encourage families to get out and spend time outdoors, there is a good chance the neighborhood is safe. Also, do you see people outside walking around and children outside playing in the yard, it shows that the families feel safe in their neighborhood.
Visible Lines of Sight
Are there overgrown trees and bushes that make great hiding places for criminals? This could be a red flag. Look for walking trails, park areas and other common areas that have nicely trimmed trees and bushes so you can see what is happening. Also, look for well-lighted streets, parks and homes that would scare away the criminals who like to operate under the cover of darkness.
